So it’s been a few weeks since my last update. There were several times this past week I wanted write something, but I just couldn’t steal an hour to do it. It’s Sunday night, Eliz is sleeping and the kids are both away. Here is my chance!

I’ve been wanting to go to Affiliate Summit East in New York since I learned about it a few months ago. My one big problem was how. If Eliz went with me, how would we run ForYourSalon.com and ship orders? And, more importantly, even if we conceded that there will probably be few orders since it is the middle of August, what would we do with the kids? Also, since Eliz was going to assist me, I didn’t think it would be fair to have to pay for her. If I could go on my own, I would. (The last time I did something like this on my own was in January 2001. I flew to Miami for a Taylor Rental event – we were interested in purchasing the one in Media and my prospective partner bailed on the event two days before we were to leave. I went anyway and had a very tough time getting around the airport, hotel, and event, even though my vision was substantially better than today – between 20/80 – 20/100.)

Fortunately, after an email to #ASE10, I was able to work something out on entry fee for Eliz by providing a letter from one of my eye doctors. Conveniently, I had an appointment with Dr. Ayres, the cornea specialist this past week and he agreed to write the letter for me (more on the appointment later.) I’d like to thank Amy from Affiliate Summit for all her help!

The big question was about the kids. Do we take them and let them take in the sights of NYC on their own? The Museum of Modern Art is across the street from where the event will be held and 5th Ave is only a block away. The bottom line was that we didn’t feel comfortable with that and thought it would be too great of a distraction for us. We’ll take the kids back another time. Eliz’s mother (Grandmere to the kids) will sleep here the two nights we won’t be here. She’ll also grab dinner for them. As she says, she’ll supervise not babysit.

So, along with doing my normal routine of communicating with customers, updating shipping status’, and helping Eliz with the heavier deliveries, I was also constantly checking Hotels.com (Hotels.com by city, dates and number of guests) for a place to stay since I missed out on the good deals through the event at the New York Hilton, where the event is being held. I just couldn’t pay $400 per night plus taxes to stay there… So, the post is sponsored by Hotels.com.

I also had a few things to do for <a href="http://www.dgdesign.net" title=
Digital Graphics Design, Media's premier web development firm specializing in e-commerce development, corporate identity, and web hosting solutions."> Digital Graphics Design. The main item was end of the month invoicing. We had picked up a couple more hosting accounts, plus Dan had completed some updates for current clients. While my title is president, my actions are primarily as bookkeeper… Dan did get a lead for an e-commerce, so Dan, Ken, and I kicked around pricing for that after doing some research on what the prospective client wants. Keep your fingers crossed… In other spare time, I’ve been helping a friend who just opened a shop by creating a logo and working on a website for her. I really miss doing that, but I don’t feel my work is up to par to actually charge for it.

This past Wednesday afternoon, I had an appointment with Dr. Ayres, as I mentioned above. There wasn’t much of a change. The eye chart seemed a bit blurrier than at my appointment a few weeks earlier with Dr. Garg. I could read the E, but the S in the SL line was difficult for me. I’m not sure if I would’ve been able to read it if I didn’t know what it was. Dr. Ayres had a look and we spoke about the fluctuation in my vision. He had Gordon do some sort of scan to measure my cornea. They used a machine they were trying out and he hoped that he’d still have it at my next appointment to get another scan at a different time of day. Looking into the machine, I saw what looked like one of the flowers on the Mystery Machine. Zoinks! While I was having the scan done, Eliz asked Dr. Ayres about writing the letter for the Affiliate Summit. When we returned to Pod 2 (I still don’t know why they don’t call them EyePod 1, 2, and 3…) Dr Ayres and I talked about the letter. He told me to continue on the eye drops and come back in six weeks, in the morning. So while there weren’t any miraculous breakthroughs on why my vision can’t get back to where it was just after the surgery in mid-April, I wasn’t really expecting too much and my IOP remains stead at eight, which is good considering it could get wacky (cuckoo bananas?) because of the drops that I’m on. As promised, Dr. Ayres had the letter to me by the next morning.

It’ll be interesting to see if this week is as frantic as last week. Since both kids are away, it will certainly be more quiet here.

Had a 9.00am appointment yesterday (Friday, 9 July) with my glaucoma doctor at Wills Eye Institute in Philadelphia. We usually schedule appointments that early for the cornea and retina doc’s in Bala, since Jane’s school is on the way and we can drop her off, so I guess we were in that frame of mind when we made the appointment (because Jane has been on summer break for a month…) I’m not sure why I even needed this appointment since I was just there in May.

We left the house at 8.15am and traffic was surprisingly light. Even the road work on the Girard Point Bridge didn’t slow us down. Things were going great until we were about 25 yards from the parking garage at Wills Eye. A minivan was at the entrance and the driver seemed like she didn’t want to go in. Once she noticed us, she proceeded slowly. She got her parking ticket out of the machine and continued very slowly up into the garage. We always like to park on the top floor, which is the seventh, because it is the only floor that you don’t have to go to the ground floor, get off the elevator, and then get on a different elevator. On seven, you walk right into the hospital and grab an elevator to either nine (low vision,) ten (cornea,) or eleven (glaucoma.)

Anyway, after a couple of floors, this lady has a parade of cars behind her. She sees an open spot and tries to park. She pulls in at the wrong angle and sees she will hit the car on her left. Backs up, but doesn’t change her turn at all. Tries to pull in exactly the same way, then backs up again because she sees she still doesn’t have clearance on her left. Horns start honking. People start yelling. She then just stops. Seriously. I ask, “Who’s driving that car, Stevie Wonder?” She is in the middle of the driveway, blocking us and everyone behind us. More honking. More yelling. Eliz did neither. She pulls away from the space to give us and everyone else room to get past her. At this point, I’m regretting coming to this appointment. We get to seven and head inside.

We sign-in on the eleventh floor and have a seat. Eliz starts to read out the letters for the word scramble in the newspaper. My mind is not in shape for figuring these out (I was up until 2.30am researching colognes, perfumes, and other hair and skin care products that can be drop shipped to our customers — watch for them soon on ForYourSalon.com.) After a couple of minutes we get called to the desk to confirm my info and to pay the copay. As the receptionist is running our credit card (we always pay by credit card at doctors’ appointments because we’ve been burned in the past by having to prove we paid,) she is distracted from another receptionist talking on her mobile phone. She realizes as she’s handing Eliz the slip to sign that she charged us $25, not the correct amount of $20. ”Oh, I’m sorry, I’ve charged you $25. You don’t mind if we just put the extra $5 on your account, do you? It really is a pain to void it,” she says. Eliz says okay and signs the slip. We head back to the waiting area. I’m more annoyed now. I’m not sure if it was just the receptionist I was annoyed with or me for not saying anything about it. Eliz and I discuss what just happened and then Eliz starts back on the sudoku. I close my eyes and wait to be called back.

After some time, we get called and head to a room. The tech takes us to a room we’ve never been in and begins to ask how things are going. I tell her the same old story. She then asks about my meds. I begin to tell her about the eye drops I’m on, while she is reading the meds that were written in my chart from the last appointment. She interrupts me before I get one med out of my mouth. She says, “Are you still on Predforte?” I answer no and again begin to tell her what I’m on. She interrupts again asks about another steroid, similar to Predforte (but not the one I’m on.) Again, I say no and say I’m on Durezol, but pronounce it Durzol. She then says, “Do you mean…” and says something with about something that begins with a “D,” but is about six syllables longer than Dur ez ol. Eliz and I say no. This goes on for another couple of minutes and we move on to the next eye drop. Since it is the newest one, I had ripped the top of the box off and brought it with since I couldn’t see to read the name. I then have to explain to her several times how it is applied (though it is an eye drop, the cornea doc told me to put it on my finger — it is very thick — and, with my eye closed, rub it along the seam where my lids meet.) She wasn’t getting it… The last eye drop was an easy one. She writes it down and has a look at my eyes.

She asks me to cover my left eye while she shines a light into my right. She asks if I can see it, which I can. She moves the light back a foot or two and asks again. This time I can’t see it. Okay, now onto the left eye and the eye chart. I was happy that it was a different chart, one I haven’t memorized. ”Do you see that,” she asks while showing the big E. I tell her yes, it is the E. The next line was a C and a D, which I also am able to read. I can’t really see the next line, so she hands me the pinholes. Still no luck. She says okay and takes the pinholes from me and writes somethings in my chart. While she’s doing this, I continue to try to see the 20/100 line. One of the letters in the middle looks like an H or an N. I ask if that is true and she says, “Yes, it’s an H. I’ll give you a plus one.” Hooray. We then have to go back to the waiting room until there is a room the doctor can see us in. I’m happy to get away from that know-it-all tech.

After a short wait, we head to a different exam room. The tech this time is William, who is 43057895743759385473% better than the first tech, puts some drops in my eyes and Dr. Pro walks in. He greets us and asks me a few questions. The first couple of answers where fairly short, like, “yeah, it is about the same as the last time I was here.” He then asks me another question, but after I say about five words, he begins talking to William. I stop talking. He says go on. I start again and he starts talking to William again. He says continue, but after a few words, his mobile goes off and he checks it to see that it is a doctor that he needs info from (Eliz later told me that he had an emergency surgery scheduled at 10.30am, so it probably had to do with that.) He hands the phone to William to get the info and asks me to put my head in the machine so he can have a look. Let’s face it, I really didn’t have anything good to say, and even if I did, I don’t think he was really interested. He has a look and then takes the IOP of each eye (13 in the right, 8 in the left.) William has finished on the phone and Dr. Pro starts giving him the info of what he saw in my eyes (besides the blank stare back.)

Dr. Pro then tells me things on the glaucoma side look good. He says he believes the vision issues I’m having aren’t glaucoma related and it is best for Dr. Ayres (cornea) and Dr. Garg (retina) to figure out was the issue is. News flash, no one seems to know why my vision came around for those ten days in April after the surgery and then went bye-bye. Not me, my doctors, or even that voodoo woman named Phyllis. We shake hands and head to a different reception desk to checkout.

We get to the desk and the receptionist is finishing up with a woman. When she is done, she says to us, “I’ll be right with you, I’ve just have to send a fax to a doctor.” Her tone made me believe she meant: You’re done, you’re not as important as a doctor, so just wait a few minutes. After about five minutes, she starts to help us, but notices the lady before us is still there. The receptionist asks her if she had a question. The lady says she was just waiting for an appointment card for her next visit. The receptionist apologized for not giving her one and writes one out for her. Now it is our turn. She reads the form Eliz handed her and says, “You’ll have to call back on Monday. The doctor wants you to have a Fields test and I can’t schedule that now.” So, we wasted our time standing there waiting.

Let’s recap: We wasted nearly three hours (an hour and a half at Wills, plus travel time to and from) on this appointment and wasted over $43 (the $20 copay, the $5 credit we’ll supposedly get for next time, and over $18 for parking — that is with validation, otherwise it would have been $22.) I told Jake the night before it was going to be a waste of time. I only wish I could use these Nostradamus powers to select the correct Powerball numbers.

As you’ve read here over the past seven weeks, I’ve been pretty frustrated and miserable. On the way to my my cornea specialist, Eliz and I were talking about what I was planning on discussing with Dr. Ayres. I was going to tell him how tired I was running back and forth to all these eye specialists who couldn’t really figure out why my vision had deteriorated to 20/200 (close to my pre-surgery acuity) after I was able to read most of the 20/100 line a week after the surgery. I was also going to ask Dr. Ayres to ease off some of the drops. I was up to about 8 to 10 per day, and after some, my vision was blurry for varying lengths of time, reducing my vision further.

So we’re driving down Lancaster Ave. after dropping Jane at softball camp at Villanova and we turn on Preston and Steve on WMMR (Eliz is a huge fan.) They were talking about some guy who was trying to get into the Guinness Book of Records by singing the lowest note ever. The discussion somehow turned to the Oak Ridge Boys and their hit Elvira (warning, don’t click the link, you won’t be able to get the song out of your head…) They were talking about how deep one of the members of the band could sing, were making fun of the song and then mentioning that one of the members was from Collingswood, NJ (it is in southern New Jersey.) I was laughing so hard I was crying. Tears were streaming down my face for over five minutes. When they finally stopped, we were just passing St. Joe’s on City Ave. I grabbed a tissue and wiped my eyes and began to look around. Things looked clearer to me. We stopped at a red light and I looked at the trees and buildings and told Eliz that things looked better than before the tears flowed.

We were only a minute or two away (his office is on Presidential Blvd. in the Pagoda Building, just off City Ave.) We sat in the car for a minute or two since we were early. I looked at the building and the trees and things still looked better. Once we walked in, things were still tough to see inside. We took the elevator to his office and signed in. Eliz grabbed a magazine and started looking through it. I glanced at the front cover, but couldn’t make out the title, so I thought my vision was returning to its current normal. After a few minutes, I was called back to Pod 3 (which I suggested on multiple occasions to rename EyePod 3.) Tia was the name of the tech and she questioned me about what meds I’ve been taking and how my vision was doing. Then she turned on the eye chart. E looked clearer. So did SL. I was then able to make out the L first, then the P in the OPLB line. (As I’ve mentioned before, I know all the lines down to DAO6, the 20/60 line, so I’m never 100% sure I’m actually seeing them.) There is no alternative 20/100 line other then the OPLB line, like there are for the 20/80 line and better, so I was given credit for seeing the P and the L. With the pinholes, I tried both the CAV8 (20/80) line and its numerical alternative without being able to read anything.

Dr. Ayres came in a few minutes later and I told him about what happened on the way into the appointment. He then took a look and had me blink twice. He noticed that my eye was losing the tear film in about five seconds (he didn’t use a stopwatch, instead opting for the technical Philadelphia, as in one Philadelphia, two Philadelphia, etc. We always used Mississippi when we played football as kids. You could blitz on five Mississippi…) He then explained to Eliz and I that 10 seconds is the norm for the tear film to last after blinking. I’m not surprised that my eyes aren’t normal. Never have been, never will be. He also mentioned that once the eye begins to dry, the visual acuity begins to fall. He gave me more drops, over the counter lubricating drops for during the day, and a prescription for a drop to use at bedtime. It is an antibiotic that evidently is somewhat thick. It is used for infections in the eye, but I was instructed to close my eye and massage it onto the edge of my upper and lower lids. I’ll let you know how that goes in a few days since I haven’t used it yet. Dr. Ayres also took me off one of the steroid drops (two less drops per day) and Muro 128 (four times per day.)

Can it be that at least part of my current eye issues were discovered because of Preston and Steve? Yup! So, thank you Preston and Steve (and Kathy, Casey, Nick, Marisa, the Oak Ridge Boys, and that guy trying to sing the lowest note!) Now I just have to hope that the new drop works. Wish me luck (again…)

Well, it has been a week of total frustration. Since mid-afternoon last Thursday, my vision has not been good. Every day when I wake up I hope that it will be better, but then I open my eyes. I’ve got just under three weeks until I visit the retina doc again, but at this point, it seems pretty obvious to me that the drops aren’t working.

I’m pretty sure I’ve been less than a joy to be around this past week. I have just been miserable. Even watching the Flyers advance to the cup finals brought me down. I was there in 1997. Not this time. No point in going. I’ll watch it on TV though.

I’m tired of not being able to find things and having to ask Eliz for help. I’m tired of bumping into door jams because I go a little wide right. I’m tired of waiting and hoping. I want to move forward.

For the first time in a very long time, I got a chance to hit in a softball game. I’ve been looking forward to it since the middle of April, after my surgery. A few weeks ago, when my vision was heading in the wrong direction, I didn’t think I’d even try. After my visit to Dr. Garg a couple of days ago and starting the drop regimen, my vision seemed to improve a little, so I was back in.

After some stretching (okay, very little stretching on the parents’ part,) we grabbed a ball and warmed up. We threw the ball around like we do here: Jane to Eliz, then Eliz flips me the ball to me (I like to pretend I’m the second baseman and I’m turning a double play,) then I “fire” it to Jane. Jane will sometimes just give me grounders that I field (without a glove, I don’t want someone to think I can actually play and throw me the ball) and throw to her. After about 10 minutes of that the girls took the field and the parents went to the bench.

The batting order was determined by who went over and grabbed a bat first. I hit fourth. We went through the order all at once. After three outs though, if there were any runners on base, they came in and the next batter started a “new inning.” Wasn’t too different than t-ball for Jane about eight years ago. Two of the first three parents struck out, while the other grounded out. I felt no pressure stepping into the batters box, since I wasn’t going to be the first one to strike out. I so wanted to make contact. First pitch was a ball high. Second one was over the inside part of the plate, strike one. Third pitch was in the exact same spot, strike two. The fourth pitch bounced on the front of the plate, ball two. I probably saw that one the best and had the bounce been higher, I probably could have hit it — like in mush ball. The fifth pitch looked good, but I swung and missed, strike three. There were at least six strikeouts on our team, including Jane’s K of Eliz.

I noticed when I was batting that I couldn’t see as well if I looked straight at the pitcher, I had to glance toward first base to see the ball better. That concerned me, because that is what seemed to be going on over the last couple of weeks. My central vision wasn’t good. I went out with Eliz to stand in rightfield. As we were talking, I told her my vision wasn’t right. Since I started the drops, I had noticed an improvement. I even commented to Eliz on the ride to school that I’m glad I took the eye drop just before we left home and that I was seeing pretty well as I watched the cars on the road in front of us. How could my vision have changed so quickly? Was it the running around while we were throwing the ball around? Was it bright sun? I don’t know what the answer is, but my vision seems like it has gone back to how it was before I went to Dr. Garg on Tuesday. Once I finish with this entry, I will investigate macular edema a little further.

After two more drops today, my vision is bad. I had trouble reading most of the graphics on TV tonight and the text on the computer is fuzzy. Fortunately, I have an appointment tomorrow with Dr. Ayres, the surgeon and cornea specialist. Maybe he’ll have an idea about the macular edema and the quick change in my vision. Most likely, I’ll have to wait until I go back to Dr. Garg on 15 June. It’s funny, I think if I had hit the ball, I don’t think I would have noticed or been bothered by the decrease in vision. I’m already looking forward to next years game…

Couple other short items… I spoke to Dr. Rist, my gp, today. She was calling to give me the results from a blood test I had yesterday after my appointment with her. They were all very good and well within the normal range. They were dramatically better than a year ago. My blood pressure yesterday was also pretty good, 104/68. All in all, the 1500 calories per day has been a good thing. I will be increasing my caloric intake to about 1700 next week, since I’m within a few pounds of my goal. The doctor calculated my metabolism and came up with that number. I asked the doctor if the results were back from the throat swab she had done yesterday (I’ve had a sore throat since early last week, along with chills the first day or two,) but they haven’t as of today. She prescribed Amoxicillin yesterday since she had noticed some things in my throat.

Also, we’ve been getting more calls to our design company (Digital Graphics Design) as of late. I had to cancel a meeting with a prospective client earlier in the week since I wasn’t feeling well. Today we got a call from a professional looking for a small website. I am going to attempt this one on my own. Let’s see how that goes. When I took the call in the morning, I was seeing okay and was confident I could do it. Now I’m not so sure.

I was looking forward to my second visit to Dr. Ayres since the surgery on 15 April. The last few days have been trying. I began to notice that my vision was changing. I was getting a bit nervous as I was having difficulties seeing things close to me and up to five to 10 feet away. Some of the problems, I figured, had to do with my eye healing and changing. The eye drop regimen also could play a part in my vision.

While we were in the waiting room, Eliz and I did the word scrambles in the Inquirer (her mother gives that section to us after she finished the crossword puzzle, so we usually have a few days of scrambles to do.) I realized today while we were doing the scrambles that I am a visual thinker when it comes to these puzzles. That is not good since I can’t see the puzzles at all. I have no trouble doing math in my head without seeing the numbers, but I am slow, usually, with the words. I do occasionally get the words before Eliz, but she is usually quicker than I am.

After completing three puzzles, we were called back to Pod 2. I was able to read the OBLB (20/100) line, though it didn’t seem as crisp as it did the day after the surgery. The pinholes brought it into focus, but I couldn’t read any of the CAV8 (20/80) line. Dr. Ayres came in and had a look. He said things looked very good. My IOP was up to 10 (which is higher for me than normal,) but he believes it is from the steroid drops that I was taking four times a day and believes that will fall back a few notches as I lower the amount of those drops (I take them three times per day for the next week and then two times per day until I see him on 21 May.) I hope he is correct about the pressure…

After he finished looking, we talked about what is going on with my vision. I told him of my difficulties seeing things close to me and the trouble I had since the weekend even on the computer. He apologized about not giving me the whole story before the surgery and said that the lens he put in was for distance. I told him I was happy with how I could see things in better detail than before. He explained that, like a person 10 to 15 years older than me, I had lost the ability to focus at things close up. He hoped that the problem could be fixed with glasses, but it was too soon for that since my eye is still healing and will continue to change as it does.

I brought the pair of reading glasses I’d been using since the surgery to read on the computer and see food on my plate so he could check the strength. I’ve used several different magnifications since the transplant in December ‘08 and I wasn’t sure which pair these were. I was also concerned, since they were less effective over the last few days. Fortunately, they were 3.5X. I knew that I had a pair of 4x glasses at home, somewhere. When we got home, I found them and was relieved that they made reading my screen much more comfortable than the 3.5X pair. I hoping I don’t need to go up to 5X, but they would still be cheaper than prescription glasses. They will do a refraction at my next visit on 21 May.

I don’t know if it was the 4X reading glasses or what Dr. Ayres had to say about how good things looked, but it seems that I can see better after the appointment. I only have to wait two weeks before I see my glaucoma specialist, so we’ll see how the IOP is doing then. I’d also like to get a fields test to see how that has changed since the surgery. Maybe I can have that done then too. I’ll post it here on the blog if I have it done…

Generally, I’m happy with the results so far. Eliz and I may go to the movies this weekend (her birthday is Saturday and she’s requested Mexican Post for dinner, then a movie at Regal across the street.) Jane’s Bar/Bat Mitzvah schedule (six in the next eight weeks) may force us to reschedule… I tried to help Eliz prepare some parts of dinner tonight, with limited success. Shooting pictures and video is something I’d like to try soon. I tried taking a picture a day or two after the surgery, but couldn’t see well enough through the viewfinder. I may have to leave the lcd screen on for pics and videos to be usable… For now, lets see what tomorrow brings.

As you can see, I haven’t posted in awhile. Eliz and I went to a trade show this past weekend up at the Sheraton Meadowlands. We missed last years show because we were both sick, so I was looking forward to going this year. I always enjoy listening to the sales pitches on why we should be carrying the company’s product or line of products. I was especially looking forward to speaking to companies about getting their products on ForYourSalon.com – Professional Beauty Supplies and Salon Equipment For Your Salon.

Many of the companies we met with are ones that we’ve done business with in the past and have currently on ForYourSalon.com, like Zotos, Marianna, and Satin. For them, we just needed to order their new products and get artwork so that we can put the new stuff on the site. Other companies we met with were those that we have some inventory, but haven’t gotten the products up on the site. China Glaze, Fromm, and Mona Lisa Hair Accessories come to mind. Then there are companies like Wm. Marvy Company. We may have sold some of their items in the past, but we don’t have an inventory, but they have a product line that they will drop ship for us. I love companies like that. Their product line that I’m adding to ForYourSalon.com is barber poles. It is a quality product that I don’t have to inventory.

It is nice talking business with manufacturers reps and other distributors, most of whom have been in the beauty biz for a substantial amount of time. I always seem to learn something from these people. Even the gung-ho, there-is-no-escaping-our-booth-without-learning-about-our-products sales peeps have tidbits of very useful information. My favorite booth is always the Mona Lisa Clips booth. The sales guy, who’s name I can’t recall at the moment, should be doing infomercials. This year, he shared some ideas on selling his products and other similar products online. He talked of calling the category Hair Management. Hmmm, I thought. HairManagement.com is just way too long, but HairMgmt.com isn’t. It was a lightbulb moment.

We went back to our room and fired up a PC Margaret lent us and tried to get online. One minute we were on, the next minute the page wouldn’t load. We had enough time on to download FireFox, since the only web browser was the dreaded Internet Explorer 6. It is not friendly to people like me with vision issues. When we tried to run FireFox, we couldn’t get online at all. After dinner, we called tech support to try and resolve our problems. After an hour and a half, they told us there was nothing more they could do. Turns out, it could have been the weather that night, but I’m not 100% on that. The hotel refunded our money for the “high-speed” internet connection. We then tried to use the complimentary computers the hotel has in the lobby. It was like being back in the mid-80’s and on CompuServe with my 300 baud modem and my 8088 IBM-compatible computer built by Jim Conallen! Each page load took between two and three minutes. Eliz got as far as adding the domain to our cart and inputting the GoDaddy coupon code OYH7 to get the domain for $7.67 before the service went down. (The next morning, I called Margaret — who stayed at our house with Meghan and our kids — and she completed the transaction.)

The only bad part about the show was my sight. Eliz would tell me what booths we were passing and the items they had (if I didn’t know.) She would also tell me if a person we knew was coming over to talk to us. I can’t tell you how many times she had to tell me to shake a person’s hand because I didn’t see it extended. That was the worst. A close second was being in the hotel room. Without a computer I could see (I don’t know why I just don’t say Mac) and the internet, I couldn’t research the items we saw on the show floor. I couldn’t see what sites sold what products for what price. It was like flying, uh, blind. Eliz would go through the brochures and read me some of the things she felt was important. I was so miserable, I’m surprised she didn’t throw me out of our eighth floor hotel window (with the wind that night, I would have had greater hang time than a Sean Landetta punt across the street at what was Giants Stadium.)

My sight continues to worsen. By the end of the day, it is so bad I hate to write emails to customers for fear of embarrassing mistakes (forgive any typos here for 24 hours, please.) I have also hesitated adding products to ForYourSalon.com. I don’t want to sell one of those new Marvy barber poles for $4.99 instead of $499… Surgery is only 27 days away, but I wish it was tomorrow. I’ve always been told to be careful what you wish for, but I’ll take my chances on this one.

It’s funny how excited I still get about snow. This winter has been a dream come true. I have always loved going out into the snow. When I was a kid in the late 70’s and we had a couple of big storms (okay, big then, but not 2010 standards,) I’d have to shovel the driveway and some of the grass so our schnauzer named Schnappes could go out to play and do his business.

I would often shovel our elderly neighbor’s driveway first because of the “payment” I would receive. Fresh-baked, homemade gingerbread men. Wow were they good. They were usually done by the time I finished shoveling our driveway. One time, my dad came home early and noticed I had done the neighbor’s driveway first and asked why. I told him because he couldn’t bake.

This last week has been great. Two huge storms with plenty of snow. Jake, Jane, and I started shoveling Saturday around noon (I had shoveled once on Friday night while Eliz was picking up Jake from school after he attended the school play Little Shop of Horrors.) The three of us shoveled for about an hour and then Jane had to go inside to get ready for a Bar Mitzvah which she was attending at 5:00pm. Jake and I continued shoveling so Eliz could get out and get Jane to her friends house to carpool to the service (thankfully the party was postponed until noon the next day.) Jake and I cleared enough snow so Eliz and Jane could get out and had the whole driveway clean by the time Eliz was ready to pull in after returning from dropping Jane off and looking for a new shovel.

With yesterday’s storm, Jane and I went out to shovel. I did most of the shoveling while Jane did some, but concentrated on building a snowman. We were outside for a little more than an hour and had cleared a good portion of the area of the driveway by the garage doors and a path to the street. I intended to go back out, but our power had gone out. After resting for 10 minutes or so, Eliz said we should play a game. The choices were Life, Monopoly, and Risk. I am not a fan of Life and we thought Risk would’ve been too hard without power and little outside light due to the dark gray clouds and heavy snow coming down. Monopoly it was!

We had fun playing for over an hour. We stopped for a tea and hot chocolate break and as we started to play again, the power came back on. We took a few minutes to power up the computers in the office and check for any sales on ForYourSalon.com (we had some!) We resumed playing around 4:00ish. After another hour, Jake was broke. He went and watched Ghostbusters that was playing on cable. Eliz, Jane, and I played on. Jane was just about broke, but then she landed on Free Parking, where we start off with $500 and then add all the fines and taxes to the pot. She scored nearly $3000! She was down to one monopoly, but now had cash.

At around 6:00pm, the power went out again. We continued to play with flashlights and a candle providing us light. Eliz took too many rides on the railroads (all owned by me) and was living it up in hotels on Boardwalk, Park Place, Oriental Avenue, and Pennsylvania Avenue (also owned by me,) so she went broke. With Jane only having one monopoly, she wasn’t bringing in enough cash. I believe a stop at my hotel on Boardwalk finished her off. It was the longest I’ve ever played. It was probably three to four hours long, not including breaks. It was awesome. Had the power not gone out, we probably wouldn’t have played (and even if we did, we definitely wouldn’t have played that long.)

Today we all went outside around 10:45am to clear the driveway. The area we shoveled yesterday had about eight or nine inches on it and was much easier to shovel today since it was lighter. The rest of the driveway, included the path to the street which was covered over and as high as the non-shoveled areas, wasn’t as easy. Snow had drifted in some areas and yesterday’s snow was still heavy and much icier. It was so tiring mainly because of piles of snow along the driveway that we had to throw the shovel-full of snow over were so tall.

While we shoveled, we joked around with one another and talked at times. We finished off the driveway and the area in front of the mailbox (in time to get one check and a blizzard of bills today.) We went inside to rest for a few minutes and decide on lunch. We ended up at Five Guys in Lawrence Park. Even the ride there was nice in the heated car. The restaurant had the heat cranked and it felt great there too.

The power had come back on just before we left for lunch at 2:00pm (I had to open the garage door manually, but by the time Eliz backed out and I came in to close the door manually the power was on,) so when we returned, it was back to work. It was nice to see we had a few more sales to acknowledge since the power had gone out.

All in all, it was a fantastic 24 hours. Without the power, we spent more time together as a family. We worked together to clear the driveway (even though Eliz shouldn’t have shoveled since she is still getting therapy for her arm.) It felt good to be with the kids without them wanting to bolt for their computers or a video game and me not taking another call or updating the website. I guess we probably wanted to do that, but we couldn’t. No matter, I still enjoyed the time together. I can’t wait for the next snow.

It has been a long day. It started off with a trip to the retina specialist at 8:30 am. We were a few minutes late, so only had to wait about 10 minutes in the waiting room. Eliz had a cup of tea from the Senseo (or similar) machine, while I brought my own (my favorite Teavana mix: Queen of Babylon and Rose Garden Rooibos.) I was called back into the first exam room, where I would (try to) read the eye chart and go over my eye issues. Kelly asked about any of my eye problems and then noticed we were from Media. She said she grew up in Wallingford. When Eliz told her we did as well, she mentioned that she graduated from Strath Haven in 2002. I told her I graduated from Nether Providence and Eliz from Strath Haven and Kelly asked if I went to school with her mother since I was born in 1954. I laughed and asked if I looked 55… I guess if there’s going to be a mistake, that one isn’t bad at all. She corrected my birth year to 1964 and we moved on to the eye chart.

Again, I was unable to read any of it until I flipped the pinhole cover down. Like magic, the E appeared. I then said I know the next line is S and L, but I can’t see it. She told me I was wrong. What!?! It’s not S and L. Now I had to know. I moved the pinholes all around until it was as clear as it was going to be for me. I guessed O for the second letter. Try again. D!, I said next. That was it. The first letter (don’t ask me why I don’t read them in order) looked like it could be an O, G, or C. I guessed G in hopes of it being the GD line. No such luck. C was my next try and that was it. Kelly mentioned that this chart is made up mostly of similar letters that repeat often, so my usual deduction that I’ve got a one in 26 chance which increases with every letter doesn’t work. I’m actually going to have to read them.

Once I was finished with the eye chart, Kelly took us to another waiting room, where Eliz read me the story of the Penn State mascot in a recent addition to ESPN magazine. Before we could finish, we were called to see the doctor. Dr. Garg asked me about my issues and mentioned that he had spoken to Dr. Pro about me. He explained that even though my right eye doesn’t do much he still wanted to check it out. Since my cornea is really cloudy and I have a pretty mature cataract in it, they would use an ultrasound to have a look. He also explained a test they’d run on my left eye, to check for changes in the macular pigmentation. Dye is injected via an IV (that’s iv, not roman numeral for 4) and pictures are taken. After he mentioned the dye, I remembered that I had this test before. The images are wicked. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a flash drive on me to get the images.

I went into another exam room to have the ultrasound and then back to the second waiting room to wait on the angiography. After a 10 minute wait, Tom called me back to have the angiography. He took a couple of images of my eye before putting the dye in. The dye made me feel nauseous for about a minute. Tom took more images and left to give someone an OCT scan (which took him all of five minutes — about 1000x faster than mine took on Monday.) He then came back into the room I was in to get two more pictures.

I waited in the angiography room for a few minutes until they called me to see the doctor again. He explained what he thought was going on. He increased my use of one drop to three times per day and added another drop to try and get the swelling down in the retina and cornea. He suggested that I wait on having the cataract removed until I see him again in six weeks.

After three hours, we were out of there. We headed down City Ave to pick up Jane from school. She called me just before the ultrasound and said she wasn’t feeling well, which I knew when she left for school. I also knew we’d be right down the street from her and could pick her up after the appointment if she couldn’t last the day at school.

After I spent an hour, or so, at home (at which time I found out my mom had gone into the hospital — more on that below,) we headed over to Viva Salon in Springfield. They’ve been having a problem with a hydraulic base that was still under warranty. We swapped out the bad base for the good one that has been in our car since the move and headed to my next eye appointment.

I had scheduled this appointment with John Ruffini, another NPHS alum, to talk to him about the cataract surgery (and before I knew of any retina issues.) He had a look at my still dilated left eye and we discussed my options and the problems that could arise from taking out the cataract. He also thought it was best to see how the eye reacts to the increased drops and new drop. I have put off scheduling the cataract surgery because of moving the business and the fact that it could undo the partial cornea transplant. My left eye has endured seven operations over the years, with another one imminent. I’m tired of going through these procedures and the recovery with mediocre success. The risk/reward factor isn’t great, though I would do anything to preserve any sight I still have.

After leaving John Ruffini’s office, we made a delivery in Holmes and stopped by a salon in Milmont Park to look at a styling chair that needs replacing. We returned home at about 4:00 pm and had an alarm company tech waiting to convert our system. It took him about two hours (the whole story will have to wait for another time.)

We were finally able to head to Riddle to visit my mom. She went to the hospital at around 8:00 am this morning because she was having shortness of breath and chest pains. The doctor wanted to keep her overnight for observation. She seems to be okay, though uncomfortable because of the shingles. We are hoping to pick her up and take her home tomorrow.

What an adventure today at the Pagoda Building at 100 Presidential Ave. After a few minutes in the waiting area, we were called back. I followed Irene into a very dimly lit room, stumbling slightly on one of the stools. I sat on a stool that seemed to be a bit too high for the machine I was supposed to put my chin in while pressing my forehead against the bar. The device that was going to take the images and measurements of my retina looked similar to an older (circa 1998) surveillance camera. Inside the lens was this cool blue light, slightly lighter than the blue light on the machine that reads your IOP, that looked similar to something in a sci fi movie with a thin red line across the horizon that looked like a laser.

My good fortune was that the machine was brand spanking new and both Irene and Todd had not yet mastered it. Irene couldn’t get a good set of images and kept asking me if I was diabetic, which I am not. She then said that the cataract in that eye must be really dense, because they couldn’t get a clear image. She then decided to dilate my eye. (This test was only for the left eye. The right is waiting for the Six Million Dollar Man eye and I haven’t spotted those at Radio Shack yet.) Dr. Pro had asked that the eye be dilated, but Irene thought it wasn’t necessary at the beginning. While my pupil was dilating, Irene stepped out of the room. Todd, Eliz, and I talked about the machine. I asked Todd a question and didn’t get a response. Eliz then answered for him. Seems he didn’t realize I couldn’t see him and he nodded yes to answer my question. After about 10 minutes, Irene walked back in, but Todd wanted his turn on the machine, so Irene coached him. He couldn’t get a good image either. Irene’s turn again.

After about 10 to 15 minutes of trying, we were asked to go wait in another waiting area. We only waited there a couple of minutes and then it was back into the hot seat for me (and I didn’t stumble in the room this time since my eye was dilated…) Finally, Irene was able to get the correct images the doctor ordered. I asked if I could have one put on my flash drive. Irene said no, but said she’d print one out. As she looked through all the images, she realized that they weren’t that good. She asked if she could try again on getting a good image. At this point, either Eliz or I mentioned the Endothelial transplant from December 2008. She then said that might be why she couldn’t get a good image. Whatever. She got some images she was happy with and printed one out for me… In black and white! The doctor will have a look in a day or two. I’ll call on Wednesday to see what the story is.

I’ve got a scanner issue that is stopping me from uploading the image. Hopefully I’ll figure it out tomorrow and have the image up here then. I know it doesn’t look like this image:

OCT demonstrating normal retinal architecture.

My OCT scan from 11 Jan 2010.

So now I have to wait to hear from the doctor. My image is a bit more “hilly” than the image above. I’m hopeful this is the reason for my latest issue. I also hope this can be fixed.
